Prescriptions
Ordering repeat prescriptions
The easiest way to order repeat prescriptions is:
- using the GP online system, Patient Services
This online account shows you all your repeat medications and dosage and you can choose the ones you need. If an item isn't listed, or is showing as unavailable, you can request it by opening the text box at the bottom and sending us a message.
If you need to register for paitent services, please contact the practice to provide your email address so we can send you the registration letter. You can register by completing the form HERE
You can also:
- Bring the paper form to the surgery, Monday to Friday from 8am
- Hand in your request slip to your local pharmacy to send to us
We do not take repeat prescription requests over the phone or via email other than for housebound patients with no access to a computer
Collecting your prescription
You can usually collect your prescription from the pharmacy 3 to 5 working days after you have ordered it.
You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.
You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time:
- on the app or website where you order repeat prescriptions
- at your GP practice
- at any pharmacy that accepts repeat prescriptions
- by completing our Nominated Pharmacy form
Questions about your prescription
If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.
The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.
If you would like to speak to someone at the GP surgery about your prescription:
- please arrange a routine telephone call with the GP
- ask to speak to the practice pharmacist (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday) - They run clinics in the practice so may have to call you back at a later time/date
- Ask the reception team to check your record - they can only read what the clinician has written and can not give medication advice
Serial Prescriptions
The practice is trying to make prescription ordering easier. For anyone on long term, stable medication, the GP can now issue up to 56 weeks worth of medication at a time, which is then dispensed at 8 weekly intervals by your local pharmacy. This is known as a Serial Prescription and is part of the Medicines Care and Review (MCR) service.
Once the prescription is finished, you should attend the GP practice for your review as normal, and if everything is in order, the GP will issue a further supply.
For more information on serial prescribing and MCR please see here - Medicines, Care and Review Service | NHS inform
If you are interested in getting a serial prescription to save ordering every 2 months, speak to your GP the next time you are in, or ask to speak to the practice pharmacist (currently Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday)
Medication reviews
If you have a repeat prescription, we may ask you to come in for a regular review. We will be in touch when you need to come in for a review.
What to do with old medicines
Take it to any community pharmacy who can dispose of it safely. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.
About pharmacists
As qualified healthcare professionals, pharmacists can offer advice on minor illnesses such as:
- coughs
- colds
- sore throats
- tummy trouble
- aches and pains
They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.
Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.
Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.
